Using historical traffic data the Virginia Department of Transportation has compiled a helpful list of the most problematic zones of congestion and the times to experience highest levels of traffic.
Areas experiencing the heaviest congestion:
- I-95 Northbound from the I-64 overlap in Richmond to the I-395/I-495 Springfield Interchange on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday during the afternoon to mid-evening hours.
- Southbound from I-395/I-495 Springfield interchange to Fredericksburg on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday during the late morning through early evening hours and from the mid-morning to early afternoon hours on Thursday. Southbound between the two U.S. 17 exits on Friday from late morning to early afternoon hours.
- Southbound from Carmel Church (State Route 207) to Ashland (State Route 54) on Sundays during the mid-morning to late evening with pockets of congestion from Ashland to Colonial Heights on Wednesday during the same hours
